January Classes and the Skacel KAL

Our list is up here and the sign-ups have begun. I'm happy to say we've already had our first sold-out class (the Beginning Knitting class on 1/13), so Yay beginners!

Don't forget that we will be happy to create a class for you--just gather a couple of friends and pick a project. (We have lots of ideas if you need a suggestion.) For $60 per two-hour session we will teach up to seven students on YOUR schedule. We are so excited to offer this alternative for classes.

You might have noticed we don't have any sock classes on the schedule. There's still lots of opportunity to learn socks this winter. Knit Purl Hunter, together with our lovely distributor Skacel, is offering six FREE knit-a-longs to make socks and fingerless gloves. Michelle will offer videos and lots of skill-building with one project a month. Even better, Skacel is offering very generous prizes every month, including several sets of Addi Clicks, with the final grand prize of a trip to Seattle and a shopping spree in their warehouse!

There's no real sign-up in the shop--to enter the contest you'll just send a photo of your completed sock to Skacel. They ask that you use the designated Trekking yarn which we carry in the shop, with extra credit given for using their chosen color. We HAD the chosen color in the shop for about two hours last week, but sold out faster than we've ever sold out of anything. More is on the way and should arrive in the shop Tuesday afternoon. This is a fun, low-stress way to learn some new skills at your own pace and on your own schedule. Let us know how it's going!

Please note that you can actually follow along the KAL using any yarn you like. However, only projects knit with Trekking yarn will be eligible for the prizes. Happy Knitting!

Classes and Christmas Hours

First, classes for January, February and March are available! Check our our Class link over there to see them. We anticipate adding a few more classes as we get closer to March and then into April. Please let us know what you'd like to see.

Second, here are our hours for this week:

Tuesday-Wednesday: 10-6 as usual.
Thursday, 12/23: 2-6 p.m.
Friday, Christmas Eve: 10-1 p.m.
Saturday, Christmas Day: Closed.

And then for next week, we are open as usual Tuesday through Friday, including open late on Thursday for Purl Jam! We will be CLOSED on Saturday, January 1, for New Year's Day.

New Mystery Knit-A-Long!!

Wow! Sorry the blog has been quiet for so long. Tons has happened in the shop--have you been in lately? We have the latest from Rowan, Malabrigo, Manos, along with old favorites from Cascade and Plymouth. We've even got great new tools like knitter's graph paper and looms, too.

But...this post is about the newest Mystery Knit-a-long. Available today for $5, this quick knit will get you totally warmed up for knitting in the round.

Some clues: Nope, we won't tell you what it is, but...there are NO seams. There IS shaping and knitting in the round with DPNs or Magic Loop. Gauge is not important, but the project does need to be knitted to a tight gauge. And, when you're done, if you can stand to part with your cute project we guarantee you'll know someone who would love to receive it as a gift.

Trendspotting

Part of TNNA is about seeing the general direction of things: color trends, shapes, techniques, even fibers. I got to attend a couple of sessions about the fashion trends, and their feelings were:

SHOULDERS are back! Remember the 80's? Not quite so much, but lots of puffed sleeves, exaggerated shoulders, tucks and emphasis. This means more set-in sleeves in the latest designs.
COLORWORK was everywhere, too. Fair-Isle (don't you mystery knitters feel smart?!), mosaic, and intarsia went down the runway at the Friday fashion show. It had a beautiful folk feel, worked in a variety of colors.
CABLES were also prominent, but I'd say a little less than last year. But the reversible cable trend is in full force.
RED and BLACK are rumored to be hot hot hot this year, but frankly I'm not convinced. Now that so many of us have discovered the beauty of chocolate brown, are we that easily swayed?
ENTRELAC is absolutely everywhere. This is the one must-learn technique for the fall. Every single vendor had something going on in entrelac. It's great felted, it shows off self-striping yarns beautifully, and it's fun. What more could you want?!

As the summer continues, we'll be getting plenty of patterns, new yarns and classes to get you ready. And look for a slide show at the shop where I'll share some of the things I got to see.

What I saw at TNNA

Just returned from a long weekend in Columbus, Ohio, for the annual TNNA market. I saw tons and tons of bags, patterns, tools and, of course, yarn. I also got to take some great classes and now I can knit Continental!

I'm looking forward to sharing what I saw, both here at the blog and in the shop. I'm planning a couple of lunch-and-learn sessions in the near future, so I can share my new-found skills and talk about what trends and new things you can expect to see at the shop. It was very fun, and very productive, and I know everyone in the shop will be excited to see what's in store soon.

Check out our classes...next week we're offering classes to start top-down sweaters or log-cabin baby blankets. We've got a sock class in two sessions on Saturday, and we'll be teaching the dreaded Kitchener stitch on Friday. Add in a Knitting Clinic and we've covered any project you can think of!

And tell your friends...Beginner Knitting classes will be offered on Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon. Your schedule, your pace.

Great American Afghan Classes

We've been asked many times about classes for the Great American Afghan. We think we've come up with a great solution this summer. Check out our technique classes: each one offers a specific technique, and many of them can be applied to the GAA.

For EVERY square there are a variety of classes that will be helpful:

Understanding Gauge (6/3 or 6/5)

How to Read Any Pattern (7/13)

How to Fix Mistakes (7/14)

Chart Reading (8/17)

Here's a list of classes and the GAA square it can be used for:

Patterns with Knits and Purls (6/16)-Squares 4, 5, 7, 14, 20 and 25

Fair Isle (6/16 or 8/12)- Square 1

Cable Stitch (6/23)- Squares 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22, 24

Entrelac (6/25 or 8/14)-Squares 12 and 19

Increases and Decreases (6/30)-Squares 5, 9, 15, 17, 18, 23 and 24

This is a great project for learning, and since it's in squares it can be totally portable. We would love to help you put a color scheme together. We've got 112 colors of Cascade 220, and we've also just started carrying the 220 Superwash, as well, in 20 colors.

May Mystery Knit-a-Long starts

You've been waiting...and now the second Mystery Knit-a-long is ready! Pick up your first clue starting tomorrow, 5/19.

This is a really fun project, with some neat skills to try out, and it is QUICK. I did about 3/4 of it while watching my son's lacrosse tourney this month, and so that means that it must be fast. (I'm not a particularly fast knitter.) Each week has a really manageable amount of knitting...we should be doing this one in four clues.

The pattern is $6. We'll provide a set of "clues," the instructions for just a piece of the project, each week. The first clue is ready for tomorrow; each subsequent clue will be ready on Thursday of the week until we're done. (We think this should take four clues, maybe five.) At the conclusion you can pick up a full copy of the pattern, so that as you make it again and again you'll have the "real" instructions.

You'll need five colors of a worsted-weight yarn, 50 grams of each color. Cascade 220 works great. So would Mission Falls 1824 Wool, or Cascade 220 Superwash. Cottons would also work, but they aren't quite as easy to work with for this project. We do have some kits made up with our choice of five colors of Cascade 220, 50 grams of each. These kits are available for $20 each. This amount of yarn will allow you to make the project a second time, although in a different order of color. You'll also need a size 7 needle, 16" long.

Cascade Patterns

Did you know the Cascade Yarns has an enormous library of FREE patterns using their yarn? We love Cascade here at Sugarfoot, and we carry many of their great yarns. You can go here to access their patterns sorted by yarn. This cute little bubble is a baby swimsuit knitted out of Fixation. Yes, you can use Fixation for more than baby hats and socks! We have a tank top under construction right now.

Also new from Cascade is their book Sixty Quick Knits, where every project uses Cascade 220. We just received our books this week! The book is full of great patterns, from basic to more intermediate, of scarves, hats and mittens. Just in case you want to think ahead for gifts...

We'll add the link to Cascade's patterns over there on the "Sites We Like" area. Go early, go often!

Art in the Heart of Peachtree City

Peachtree Crossing, the shopping center that Sugarfoot Yarns is located in, is sponsoring a mural contest with entries from many of the local elementary schools.

We in the center were looking for a way to spruce up the empty windows of the "baby" Kroger as we await a new tenant. What better way than with murals from local kids? We have nine local elementary schools participating. Each one is terrific, but you get a chance to vote to decide the winner! Grand prize is $250 to the art program of the winning school!

You're limited to one vote per person per shop, so be sure to visit everyone in the center to vote for your favorite.

Baby Hat Contest!

Announcing a spring Baby Hat contest! Bring in your baby hat by March 26...voting will start after that and continue until April 14. Here is a little more information:

The hat can be your own creation or based on someone else's design. It must be knitted or crocheted by you, though!
Drop your hat off anytime through March 26. Make sure to label it with your name, phone number and type of yarn.
Please use yarn purchased at Sugarfoot Yarns.
Voting will start Tuesday, March 30. One vote per person per visit! But you can visit as many times as you like through April 14.

At the conclusion of the contest you may of course take your creation home. However, if you'd like we have two different groups who will be more than happy to accept baby hats.

Prizes? Of course! Grand prize is a $40 gift certificate, and runner-up is a $20 gift certificate. We'll also have a couple of drawings for other prizes. So start your needles and hooks!

Beginner Class forming!

Just wanted to post really quickly that we have a beginner class starting next Friday, March 5, at 10 a.m. The class meets three consecutive Fridays. Donna is teaching this one--she is great with beginners and will have you knitting in no time! The $65 fee includes a ball of Cascade 220 in your choice of colors and your first set of needles.

Book Review: Itty Bitty Book Series

This is a guest post from Emily. You are probably familiar with her love of all things knitting, especially books. Here she shares some of her very favorite books for baby hats, toys, sweaters and blankets.

Books books and more books. When you choose a knitting book to purchase it can be really over whelming. You are really investing your money, time, and your chance for a successful project with the purchase. There are a few criteria that I use when buying books; most of you have heard the “At least three patterns I want to make" rule. However, there are other considerations you need to take in account when making a book purchase.

When purchasing a book for Baby one author meets or exceeds all the criteria. Susan B. Anderson writes the most creative and enchanting patterns I have seen. She is the author of Itty-Bitty Hats, Itty-Bitty Nursery, and her latest book Itty-Bitty Toys. All three books are in my personal library.

The layout of Susan’s books are very similar she begins with some basics. The how-tos include basics like casting on and others to what you need to complete even the most elaborate pattern in the book.

The designs are really what set these books apart from others. You will want to make everyone of the patterns! This is a rare treat for any book. Nursery has just about everything you could want to make for that little one. The book includes a book pillow and matching sweater and slippers in bright alpaca, a mobile cover with tiny mice, covers for tissue and wipes boxes, a whimsical clothesline, with tiny jeans and parasol, a cupcake hat, mitten and scarf set complete with cherries, to (my personal favorite) pacifier clip ornaments that include an elephant and frog. I may have made 20 of these for shower gifts. There is even a felted diaper bag that will work as a purse when the diaper days are over! There are 40 one-of-a-kind pieces in all. There are a variety of projects for every level of knitter-even the most inexperienced.

Itty-Bitty Hats takes that quick gift hat to a whole other level. This book is quite possibly one of the best knitting books I own. Of the more than 30 patterns, I would say I have made 90% of them. They are adorable and practical and make the greatest gifts. Instructions are given in several sizes, usually newborn to two years. Also, most patterns come with one or two variations, and the book has an extensive and well-done “getting started” section that is very new-knitter friendly but yet has some great tips for the intermediate knitters too. My favorite is the Rosebud hat. I made it for my granddaughter and she is so cute in it that it is beyond words. (Stop by the shop and I will show you some pictures.) You will not believe how cute the first birthday hat is with one candle at the top or how enchanting the chicks in a row are for that newborn little girl. I also love the fact that not all the hats are for girls. There are great hats with bold colors for the boys in your life.

Just when I think Susan has it all covered she comes out with Itty-Bitty Toys. Again Susan’s voice and talents are evident. All her introductions are done in the first person, and each is peppered with stories from her own life and explanations of her design inspiration. She has designed blocks, balls, animals and dolls. There is a cute Christmas set with a Santa doll, his toy sack and the mouse who wasn’t stirring on Christmas Eve. Other dolls include the Princess and the Pea with multiple mattresses and a baby doll with removable clothes. There are stuffed animals and what Susan calls “Take-action toys” but what I found the most interesting was the last chapter, called “Reversibles”. Susan has designed toys that transform from one animal to another by reversing a skirt from one end to the other. A cat to a mouse, a turtle to a frog, and or an egg that becomes a bluebird, complete with its own nest. There is even the “sisters” doll which is two dolls in one. How cute is that! Some of the patterns require higher levels of skill then others but nothing that cannot be explained and learned quickly even for beginners.

We have a limited supply of all three books in the shop come in and enjoy seeing the patterns. Of course we cannot guarantee how long they will stay around. Our First Mystery KAL!

We mentioned it in our newsletter, but here's a little more information. We are having our first Mystery Knit-A-Long starting Tuesday, February 2. What in the world is this? A knit-a-long (KAL) is a project that several people tackle at the same time. It is not a class, but sometimes it is fun or helpful to compare notes with other people and see how your projects are going. And in a MYSTERY KAL, you just don't know what the project is!

So here's how our mystery KAL will work:

Purchase your materials--to participate, you'll need to purchase the pattern ($5) and your yarn from Sugarfoot Yarns. You will need 400 yards of lace, fingering or sock weight yarn. Beads are an optional part of the pattern...directions are provided, and beads and hooks are available at Sugarfoot, too.
Come to the shop on Tuesday, February 2, to get the first few lines of the pattern. Work those few lines in the coming week.
Every Tuesday for the next three weeks, come by the shop and get the next portion of the pattern.
Need help? Emily or Cheryl will be available on Tuesdays (or on other days as the schedule allows) to make things clear.
At the conclusion of the KAL, stop by and show off your project! You'll also get a "whole" copy of the pattern.

The pattern will NOT be available to purchase at the shop until the conclusion of the KAL. So jump in! This should be a lot of fun.

Spring's around the corner...

And the spring yarns have just started coming in. Yesterday we began what we hope to be a very long relationship with Knit One Crochet Too, a yarn company from Maine. We received Tartelette in a dozen colors, Ty-Dy Cotton in ten colors, and as a special treat the cute novelty called Jam in every color.

Tartelette is a lovely variegated ribbon yarn, perfect for shells and shrugs. It knits up to 4 stitches per inch on a size 9 needle. (A "4" size yarn on the Craft Yarn Council's guide.)

Ty-Dy Cotton is 100% cotton, specially dyed to self-stripe. A worsted weight cotton, it knits up to 5 stitches per inch on a size 7 needle. This is perfect for a light sweater or t-shirt...the lovely colors will do all the work for you!

We also have patterns to go with the Ty-Dy, just to get you inspired--shrugs, pull-overs, even a sweet little cardigan perfect for a little girl's Easter outfit.

We were able to purchase Jam at a special price...normally $9 per ball, we are able to offer it at $4, but we have limited quantities of it. Hurry in!

Hiya Design Contest!

ART is here!

We just received a box from Colinnette--the beautiful ART yarn in nine gorgeous colorways. The link sends you to Colinnette's site, so you can see how lovely this is knitted up.

ART is a bamboo/wool blend, a bit rustic looking, but in the most gorgeous saturated colors! We couldn't resist putting it right by the door, so you'll be sure to see it when you come in. Colinnette has also provided a great little pattern for their garter-stitch cardigan, available free with a purchase of ART. There's also a pattern on the label for a hat! They're doing their very best to tempt you over to this yummy yarn.

Knitting in the News

Did you catch this article in the Atlanta paper? High schoolers learning to knit, donating their time and finished objects to homeless shelters in Atlanta. What a great story, and kudos to their teacher, Ms. Dillard.

We have groups meeting around Fayette County, too. If you are helping a school group and find yourself in need of materials, please let me know. We've got an ample supply of slightly used needles. And if you've made some items that need a home, bring them in, too! We can find a home for ANY object you've made.

Do you have this tool?

It happens a lot...how much yarn is left on that ball? Or, how much yarn will that project take? You can't unwind it and measure it--well, maybe YOU could, but I wouldn't.

So the best thing to do is exactly what yarn companies do: Weigh it! If you knit or crochet a lot, a fairly sensitive kitchen scale is a great piece of equipment. You'll want something with a digital display, something that can measure in grams and not just ounces. Did you know that most yarn companies actually sell their yarn by weight? That's because the yarn length can vary based on how taut it's pulled while winding.

You might have seen us do this in the shop...we have a cute pair of cashmere mitts that are a sample sent to us. To figure out how much yarn to use, we weighed them and found that they weighed 30 grams. Well, a ball of the cashmere weighs 25 grams, so we know that Rowan used a little more than one ball.

You can, with a little math, then back into how much yardage you have. If you have 75 grams of Cascade 220 left, what's the yardage? Since there are 220 yards in 100 g of this yarn, we have 75% of that or about 155 yards left. Plenty for a cute hat, probably not enough for a scarf.

We don't sell scales at Sugarfoot, but wanted to let you know about this. Any good kitchen supply shop (like Trisha's Traveling Chef just down the sidewalk from Sugarfoot) should have a couple of choices.

November Project Classes

We had a great October, getting some gift knitting kick-started while growing skills. We've got some great classes already scheduled for November, too. Read on to learn more...click here to view the calendar!

Felted Handbag from Noni: We are making the Cherry Bonbon bag from Noni's Three Confections pattern. An adorable little bag with a snap handle will be the perfect accent for holiday parties or a great gift. Emily leads this class on November 3 and 10, 6-8 p.m. $40.

How to Read a Pattern: Make three dishcloths while learning so many skills to make you a better knitter. Lifelines, charts, hints and helps to make you more confident as you take on any project! Emily also leads this class, November 11 and 18 from 12:30 til 2:30. You'll be out the door in time to meet the school bus! $40.

Colonnade Scarf: Jeanine leads this class to make a wonderful shaped scarf--or is it a short shawl? Either way, check out the shop sample or the pattern, available at Knitty. This class is offered on Thurdays, 10-12, November 12 and 19. $40.

"Faux Isle" Hat: Have you always wanted to learn Fair Isle? Learn the technique, make a hat, and take it easy on yourself by picking a variegated yarn to help give you more color variation. Jeanine leads this class on November 19 and DECEMBER 3, 12:30 - 2:30. $40.

November "Standard" classes

Okay, we've gotten fancier over on the class site. Now you can click here and see the class calendar!

We have some great classes coming in November. Here are a couple of basics:

Beginning Knitting: This month we offer beginning knitting on Wednesday mornings, 10-12, starting on November 4 and continuing on the 11th and 18th. Emily leads this introduction to a fun skill. Materials are included and the cost is $65.

Knitting Essentials for November is "Fixing Mistakes!" Learn to fearlessly pick up your dropped stitches, how to make a gauge swatch and why it is so important, and how to put that knitting back on your needles and back on track. As usual, the Knitting Essentials class is offered twice, 11/5 and 11/7, each time from 10 until noon. Cost is $20. There is homework for this class, so be sure to register ahead of time.

We've got some great ideas and new patterns just into the shop, though. First, do you have a little girl in your life who loves her American Girl? How about a matching sweater set? We've just received the girl-sized patterns from Knitting at Knoon that exactly match their doll set. A perfect gift for a special little girl...

You've probably seen the gorgeous yellow shawl in the shop, made of super-huge Magnum by Cascade Yarns. We've now got several new patterns from Lisa Ellis Designs...hats, scarves, and vests in all sizes. What about a whole set of vests for the ladies and girls--can't you just see the Christmas morning photo? And at just a couple of hours each, with minimal finishing, this might be just the ticket for Christmas knitting.

We also have a cute Christmas Stocking pattern made of Magnum. The stockings come in three sizes and would be a really fast way to decorate for the holidays!

We have many more ideas. Really, are you surprised? We spend all our time in a yarn shop! Stop on in if you need inspiration or motivation, or even a cup of coffee.

A couple of new samples will be in the shop this week...

Knitty's Colonnade is the #1 project on Ravelry right now, and ours is in the shop. This small shawl only takes three balls of Lima and makes a quick, fun knit for you or a gift. The cabled construction of this alpaca yarn makes the stitches really stand out.

The sleeveless turtleneck from Sally Melville's The Purl Stitch is made from Aslantrends' Artesanal, a rustic-looking cotton/alpaca blend. This is a great layering piece, because as you know in Georgia it can be 40 degrees in the morning and 75 by lunchtime. This is another easy knit, great for showing off a textured yarn.

If you've decided you love Cascade but really need a superwash, we've got great news! Cascade 128 superwash, a bulky-weight 100% wool, will arrive by the weekend. We have a broad palette, and this is an especially good choice for gifts when you're just not sure the recipient understands that "hand wash only" means just that!

New in the Shop...

Holiday knitting must be gearing up. We just received the Holiday Gifts edition of Interweave Knits. We've had just enough time to flip through it and pick at least a few items that feel like "must-haves!"

We also received this week the set of Hiya Hiya interchangeable needles. We have several sets of the small size, which are needles size 2 through 8 along with four cables, lengths 16 " up to 40". They're all packaged in a lovely fabric case with room for a couple of crochet hooks or other little accessories you might need. The set is priced at $67. Much like the addi Click set, we've had these on order for several months. We think you'll agree that they are worth the wait.

Helmet liners are finding their way to the shop. Check out a couple that are hanging on the wall waiting for deployment. There is still plenty of time to get yours done before we send them out at the end of the month!

Project classes start next week. These are ideal for kick-starting your gift knitting or crochet!

Christmas Stocking, 10/13, 20 and 27, 6-8 p.m. Learn intarsia color technique while using your choice of patterns. Check out the Mason-Dixon stocking, Ann Norling stockings choices, or the free 1945 stocking pattern. You’ll need to know how to cast on, knit, purl, bind off and knit in the round for this class. ($60)

Lace Scarf, 10/15 and 22, 10 a.m. til noon. The Mavis scarf from Figheadh is the basis of a lovely scarf and a great introduction to lace technique. Knowledge of the “basic four” (cast on, bind off, knits and purls) is necessary. ($40)

Toe-up Socks, 10/17, 24 and 31, 10 a.m. til noon. We’ll use another Figheadh pattern as our basis, and you can choose your method of knitting in the round…DPNs, Magic loop or two circular needles. One great thing about this pattern is that it allows for any weight yarn, sock weight through worsted. ($60)

Bloomin’ Scarf, 10/15, 22 and 30, 12:30-2:30. WOW!! A crochet project class. The Mission Falls Blooming Scarfis, hands down, the most popular crochet project in the shop. This scarf is cute, wearable by any age, and a lot of fun for anyone wanting to grow their crochet skills beyond the basics. ($60)

Afghans for Afghans: Fall Campaign

Mark your calendars...we will be knitting 10" squares in the shop on October 23 and 24. The squares will be assembled into baby blankets, measuring at least 30" by 40", and no larger than 45". Feel free to start making squares now...we are collecting them all month in the shop.

A4A just posted a few pictures here. Take a look! You'll see plenty of bright colors. One thing that struck me was the cheeriness of the blankets compared to the drab hospital. Don't be afraid of bright colors. The combinations will be beautiful!

Saturday's Classes

Two classes on Saturday, and each have a couple of spots. Beginner Knitting meets 12:30 til 2:30, on 10/3, 10 and 17. Cost is $65.

The October Knitting Essential is Cable and Bobble Stitches. The Thursday morning class has sold out but the Saturday class has a couple of spots. $20 for this two hour class.

Upcoming Classes

A couple of new classes start next week. Each has a space or two left, so call the shop if you are interested!

Both of these classes assume you know the four basics: the knit stitch, the purl stitch, a basic cast-on, and a basic bind-off. The rest of the skills are taught in class.

Mac & Me's Furry Vest, with Emily, begins Thursday, September 10, from 10 a.m. until noon, and continues for two more Thursdays. (That's it up there!) Make this adorable little girl's vest out of any bulky yarn. You'll learn about gauge, seams, increases and decreases, and a few basic finishing techniques. A sample is on our manikin in the window--too cute! The cost is $60 for the three classes.

The Knitty Vest, with Donna, begins on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. until noon, and also continues for two more Saturdays. This a lovely women's vest out of a chunky yarn, and has ribbing, side seams and a cable. We offered this class in the spring as the next step beyond the scarf, and it is a great way to step out of your comfort zone, make a great garment, and have some fun. The cost for this class is $60.

Call or stop by the shop to register. Remember that you get a 10% discount for your class supplies, and you also get a 10% discount for other items purchased on your class days--a great reason to stick around and plan your next project!

Lima!

Not Peru, the new Rowan yarn. Lima arrived this week, along with the new book The Lima Collection. This is a beautiful alpaca blend with an unusual structure--it looks like a crocheted chain. This gives a lovely effect and lets your cables and pretty stitches really pop. Clara Parkes of Knitter's Review has even reviewed this yarn already, and loves it. Take a look at what she has to say, and then come check it out in the shop. We have ten colors, any one which is perfect for this fall.

Warm heads...

Perhaps you've found occasion to make hats for others--newborn hats, chemo caps, even helmet liners. You may not know that here at the shop we are a donation point for all of these!

If you like to make hats for new arrivals, the Piedmont Fayette Hospital has a group that accepts all sorts of baby caps. These are washed and delivered to the hospital and given to each little one born at the hospital. These need to be made of synthetics that can be laundered. Any pattern is great; we have suggestions in the shop if you'd like.

We also can help distribute caps for chemo patients. These need to be very soft, and while any style is fine, sometimes the stylish ones can be fun. Gay-Lynn suggested several different (free!) patterns that she has made for a family member recently: Shedir from Knitty.com--scroll down for the hat; a chemo turban; and a bunch of patterns at Headhuggers.com. Note that the chemo turban sends you to a yarn company's website! Don't feel obligated...you can ALWAYS come into Sugarfoot to get your yarn!

Finally, how about helmet liners for soldiers. It happens that one of my sales reps is a retired Army officer--I was surprised, too--and she just wrote:

On the battlefield, comfort is a difficult commodity. A knitted helmet liner (or hat) provides the cushion needed when wearing heavy protective headgear. Did you know that the Kevlar helmet weighs up to 4.2 lbs? Add protective eyewear, like goggles or night-vision goggles (540 g or 1.5 lbs), and that's a whopping 5-6 lbs on your head. Imagine wearing that up to 18 hours a day, seven days a week in oppressive desert heat. And the helmet liner also provides nighttime warmth in the desert or mountains when the temperature turns cold.

I love hearing the stories my shops tell me about their helmet liner knit-a-longs! Many shops display pictures and heartfelt letters of thanks from servicemembers in Iraq or Afghanistan. We are so blessed to have these young men and women fight for our freedom! Please continue your helmet liner projects and please let me know if I can help.

Cascade 220 is the recommended yarn for these projects...they must be 100% wool. Guidelines and patterns can be found here. As with the other projects, we are happy to serve as a collection point for the helmet liner project. You make 'em, we'll ship 'em.

Crochet Classes Added!

We've added crochet classes! Beginning Crochet starts Tuesday, September 1, at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., and continues at the same time on 9/8 and 9/15. Cost is $65 and includes one skein of Cascade 220 and a size K hook.

Intermediate Crochet also starts Tuesday, September 1, at 10 a.m. until noon. The class continues for the following three Tuesdays. The cost is $80, not including your materials. As always, you will receive a 10% discount for your class materials as well as for merchandise purchased during your class day.

Our crochet instructor is Nancy, who comes to us as a recent transplant from upstate New York. While she's new to the area she has loads of crochet and instruction experience. We are so excited to welcome her to Sugarfoot Yarns!

Afghans for Afghans: Fall Campaign

Afghans for Afghans has announced their fall campaign: baby blankets! Details are here, but the most important things are:

Animal fibers only, please! (They are warmer.)
Baby blankets 30" x 40"
No lacy patterns (again, for warmth)
No images of people or animals (an Islamic restriction)

Please be sure to check the site, though. All the restrictions are there for a reason, and so you don't want to take time making a beautiful blanket that can't be used by the program. We will be collecting blankets in the shop through October, and Sugarfoot will take care of mailing them to the organization. Also, look for news of a sit-and-knit for this project in late October.

This is a great way to use stash, try out new stitches, and know that your knitting will be truly appreciated by the people in Afghanistan. It is cool to know that these blankets are one of the most requested items by the nurses in the hospitals in Afghanistan.

Cash for Clinkers

Announcing our new needle exchange program, "Cash for Clinkers!" We know you've got unused, unloved knitting needles hanging around your house. Why not bring them in and get credit for them? Here's the deal...for every usable set of knitting needles you bring in, you can receive $1 off a set of Hiya-Hiya needles, or $2 off of Addis or Bryson Rosewood. This is limited to one credit per set of needles purchased. (It also isn't retroactive to previous needle purchases.) However, there isn't any limit to how many needles you can bring in or purchase!

Why are we doing this? Well, unlike a certain government program whose name is suspiciously close to this one, we are NOT destroying your old needles! They will find new homes with knitting programs in area schools and scouting programs. We are also sponsoring some charity knitting later this fall and extra needles may be used there, as well. Your old needles will find a home with a brand new knitter!

By the way, if you are a sponsor of a school, after-school, or similar program teaching kids to knit, please let me know. Hopefully we'll be able to help out with needles to get your kids on their way.

Hey, Look! I'm knitting!

Have you ever taught someone to knit, or tried to? Seems like it is all thumbs for a little while, and frustration, and tight, tangled yarn. And then, magically, it becomes knitting! The whole problem is to keep your "teachee" going until they can get it.

Seth Godin's blog (which a Ravelry friend told me about) talks about this very issue! In his post he discusses riding a unicycle...you can either fall off a unicycle or ride it. While you are learning, you aren't actually riding, you are falling. The problem is that you have to stick with it until you quit falling. And then, once you quit falling you are riding! And very quickly you can think about it less and less, and just ride.

Learning to knit seems to me to be a lot like this. You just have to encourage your friend or child or neighbor to keep at it. One moment they are just fumbling with string...but then, they KNIT. And while it becomes more automatic later, the big hump is getting those first few stitches on their own. Then, like the unicycle rider, the ride gets easier and you can throw in some tricks (juggling for the rider, but yarn-overs and cables for a knitter) but the biggest leap is from non-knitter to knitter.

I wanted to share it for those of you teaching someone this summer. Encourage them to hang in there! The trick is to not stop...you don't learn to ride a unicycle gradually, and the basic knitting skill doesn't really happen gradually, either. But it DOES happen! And, if you are lucky enough to get to teach someone, sit back and savor that moment...you'll see it happen before your friend does. That's a wonderful moment in the life of a knitter.

And there's still time to teach someone this summer! Remember to start them out on some basic, forgiving wool and some larger needles. That's what we do in our beginner classes. The boucles, fun yarns, cottons--they are all lovely but not the best for a true beginner. And they'll get to move on soon enough!

We are excited announce our class list for August and September! We have two beginning knitting sessions, projects, techniques...hopefully something for every knitter. You can check the list out here.

I'd like to especially point out the Knitting Essentials series. These classes are designed for those who know the basic four skills: cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Each month, we'll offer one two-hour class that addresses one new skill. August's Essential class is Increasing and Decreasing. September we will address knitting in the round, with circular needles and with double-points. In October we will learn cables and bobbles. This class will be offered two times, the first Thursday of the month and the following Saturday, each day from 10 a.m. until noon.

We anticipate offering at least a year's worth of Essentials. This is a great way to add to your toolbox of skills. Every class will conclude with a look at several samples and patterns that use the skills you've just learned, so that you understand how you can apply your new skill.

The other new "regular" is Fix-It Friday. On the third Friday of each month, spend the late afternoon getting help on a specific problem. You will be in class with four-five other people, so this is a good way to see what other people are working on. It is also a great way to pick up a lot of tips and tricks and get that stuck project unstuck.

We'll post more details on the classes as they approach. You can register anytime, though!

A few new things in the middle of Summer

Depressing...I got a phone call today from a charity, talking about something happening next Saturday...August 1. The First of August! Where has summer gone? Hopefully you are making the most of yours.

Here at Sugarfoot Yarns, we've still got new things rolling in. A week or two ago the bags from Della Q arrived...that's Della up there on the right with yours truly, while we were at TNNA last month. Several different storage solutions, needle cases, and the cutest little quilted bags, exactly the right size for socks or any one-skein project. Too cute!

Tilli Tomas is in the house! Did you see the too-cute picture of the beaded baby beanie? It sat at the register for several weeks. Two yarns arrived last week, hand-painted, beaded, feltable merino wool in a dozen colors, called Flurries, and Voile de la Mer, a lace-weight silk with sea-cell. Both are lovely and a nice complement to other yarns we offer at Sugarfoot.

GoKnit pouches also arrived today. In bright, rip-stop nylon, these are another option for making your knitting more portable. These are currently available in two sizes. We also got GoKnit's super-cute stitch marker necklace, seven sterling silver stitch markers on a rubber cord necklace. You'll want one of these for yourself even before you start thinking about holiday purchases.

In honor of our country's birthday, we'll be closed all day Saturday, July Fourth.

Stop by early to get your parade knitting...you know you'll be knitting while you sit on Peachtree Parkway Saturday morning, waiting for the best Fourth of July parade in the country. I mean, who else has a hundred-plus golf carts and every emergency vehicle in the county in their parade? Truly it is my favorite day to live in Peachtree City!

BTW...we still have a couple of balls of the Fortissima Sock Yarn, color 1776...yes, the red, white and blue self-patterning sock yarn! It might be too hot to actually wear the socks right now, but how cool will you look with this on your needles this weekend?

Ready for July

The new things have started rolling in...The lovely lady on the right up there is Nancy of Nancy's Knit Knacks (there really is a Nancy!) and we are proud to carry her knitting tools. Our first shipment of Knit Knacks just arrived. These are tools to make your knitting easier: row counters, reference cards, notion holders. Come take a look.

Synergy Shawls from ArtYarns and Be Sweet are also in. Rosemarie knit up the beautiful sample really fast--we all love the colors! Our sample is in "Forest Fruits," but there are six beautiful colorways to check out. The kit is really nifty: ArtYarns Silk and Mohair and Beaded Mohair yarns, along with a color-coordinated Be Sweet Magic Ball, all with the instructions. Everything you need for a lovely shawl except the knitting needles.

Ribbon arrived today, too! Beautiful satin and grosgain ribbons, in about nine colors each, along with black velvet ribbon in two widths. The satin is finished on both sides, and if you've shopped for ribbon you'll know this isn't very easy to find.

Whew! June was busy...weddings, the TNNA trade show, vacation, and, oh, yes, Sugarfoot Yarns. I just got back from vacation Sunday, and things were perking along great. It isn't too many shop owners who can leave and know their "baby" is in such capable hands. I owe a huge "Thank You" to Rosemarie, Emily, Leann and Melissa for keeping things humming along in my absence.

Hello from TNNA!

I thought I'd give an update on what I've seen so far in Columbus. It's been a busy two days and it's only half-way over. I've been to classes and lunches and chatted with tons of people. It has been fun to meet other shop owners and find out what their shops are like. Just yesterday I met the ladies behind Knit One, Crochet Too at my hotel. They are delightful, and make a good advertisement for their product! So today that is one of the things I'll be checking out. Helene, the owner of the company, has a design out in the summer issue of Knitty (it's out! take a look).

Samples galore sitting behind me on the bed...I see Frivola from Trendsetter. Crazy but could you be interested? A fabulous shawl kit from Be Sweet and ArtYarns. A slew of little projects from Tilli Tomas, including a beaded baby hat. Pearl, a silk and bamboo hand-dyed from Lorna's Laces. Does anything sound interesting? Of course the shop can't carry everything, but I'll be bringing some of these back, so we can all look at it in the Peachtree City sunshine.

There are also new things from lines we currently carry, which is something else I'll look at today. And all the things that go with your knitting, the little tools that make it better...I'll be looking at those today, too. Ideas are always welcome! The show floor has more than 1800 booths, making my job today like looking for a knitting needle in a...well, a really big room!

So now I'll go get ready for the show. No pictures from it here, because the show doesn't allow it, but I'm looking forward to sharing more later on in the show and (even better) when I get home!

Changes a-"Foot"

Not big changes! But June is a busy month outside the shop, and here's what's going on...

TNNA's annual summer show starts tomorrow! Why should you care? Well, The National Needlearts Association is the trade association for, among others, yarn manufacturers and retailers (like Sugarfoot). The summer show is HUGE, with almost every manufacturer, distributor, designer, you-name-it, all in one place for a weekend. The latest yarns and designs for fall will be debuted there, and it is a chance to look at yarns I might not have even heard of before. There are also a huge range of classes, which I'm going to be participating fully in. This is the first show since the shop opened, so it's the first one I've been able to go to.

So, why does this matter? Help me! What do you wish we had at Sugarfoot? A favorite yarn, a must-have tool, a terrific designer? I'm listening. And even after this weekend, keep telling me. Chances are that I'll have seen it this weekend, and your insight might be just what I need to hear to make some decisions.

Look for classes to ramp up a little, too, as the summer continues. One of my TNNA classes is "How to Organizing Classes," so we've been holding back a little to see what the "pros" have to suggest. We want you to learn as much as you want to, and feel confident approaching any yarn or pattern that interests you.

Other June changes...a friend of mine got married last weekend (best wishes, Molly!) and you might have a friend with such a joyful change, too. I wanted to share this sweet idea from Marion, shared over a Thursday night Purl Jam...after her daughter was married she made a seasonal dishcloth for her, one per month, for her whole first year of marriage. What a thoughtful, and useful, gift! This would work equally well with bibs or burp cloths and a new baby. Dishcloth patterns abound, on the internet, in books, even by just picking up a stitch dictionary and picking out a pretty stitch. If you'd like to try this but don't quite know where to start, please ask. We'll be happy to help.

Finally, summer is time for vacations! I'm no different, and the rest of the gang at Sugarfoot will be pulling yeoman's duty so I can leave for a little bit. I'm still trying to plan my vacation knitting...maybe I'll finally finish my sweater from Louet Gems. Travel knitting that isn't too "thinky" and that can possibly even be used while you're on your trip is a great idea. Who hasn't tried to eat in a restaurant that believes in refrigerating you as well as the food, especially here in the South? A shawl or shrug in a laceweight or light bamboo can always come in handy. We have ideas for those projects, too. Then there's always my current obsession, the Knitty Clapotis. (Can 11,400 Ravelry projects be wrong?)

On that note, too, here are the TSA regulations about knitting needles and supplies. I've heard that this is, in the end, up to the individual inspectors, but it looks like bamboo circs normally pass right through. I prefer circular needles anyway...they're less likely to slide into that no-man's-land between the seats! Of course, this is one area where you crocheters have the definite advantage.

We're still receiving new yarns, both for summer and fall. I'm pretty sure a new shipment of Misti Alpace Lace is on the UPS truck for us this morning...and we've got self-striping Plymouth Kudo, Aslantrends Artesanal, and new colors of Rowan Calmer in stock now!

Whether your summer started last weekend or begins this Saturday, summer is a terrific time to build your skills. Our complete list of classes is available here, but here are a couple of classes coming up in June:

Finish that Project! Bring your pieces to a class and learn to put them together. There is a sweater languishing in my sewing room that would be a good candidate for this class...do you have one, too?
Felting: Learn a great technique for slippers, bags, six-pack carriers (like that one)...one of the beauties of felting is that it covers less-than-beautiful stitches. And if you've never tried it, it really is fun to see your project change personalities as the wool felts.
Moebius scarf: A different cast-on with circular needles leads to an unusual and beautiful scarf or shrug.
Make Your Own Dress Form: This all-day class will teach you to really fit yourself or the person you are knitting for. One part of the class involves making a duct-tape dress form of yourself, so you'll never have to guess if your sweater will really fit.

If there's a technique or garment you'd like to see as a class, please ask! Our teachers are interested in teaching the things you'd like to learn. Since we are a new shop, we are still trying to feel our way through this.

Of course, you don't need a class to learn new skills. Another great way is making dishcloths...find a stitch dictionary (like Super Stitches Knitting or many others) and some cotton yarn, and cast on. Dishcloths are a fun and useful way to expand your repertoire, and they are quicker than scarves, too. If you need help finding patterns or new stitches, stop by and we'll be happy to help you out.

Just in time for the Fourth of July...kick off your Memorial Day knitting with some patriotic socks. We just received the "Fourth of July Fair Isle" colorway from Fortissima. It is, of course, red, white and blue! Bunches of new sock yarn just came in, in addition to this, and so look for some more sock classes to be scheduled. Of course, you can do way more with sock yarn than just socks! It would be perfect for a kid's sweater or a shawl. Well, maybe not a red-white-and-blue shawl, but you get the idea.

We are thrilled to be sponsoring a schooling show for Elders Mill! If you have an interest in horseback riding (hunter/jumper) then come check it out on Saturday.

Afghans for Afghans

The ribbon cutting went smoothly...thanks to all who came out! Pictures will be here later today. But first I wanted to share this article from the cool on-line knitting magazine Knitch. Ever since I heard about afghans for Afghans I thought it was a great idea, but the article drives home the wonderful thing this project is doing for people a world away from us.

The current campaign for baby blankets has ended, and they haven't announced another campaign. But now would be a good time to examine your stash and see what would work for a project...they absolutely won't accept 100% acrylic yarns or most novelties, and wool or wool blends are probably best. If you are looking for a different way to knit for others this might be just the ticket.

We'll announce when the next campaign starts, and probably we'll do some sort of knit-a-long or workshop for it, especially if it involves sweaters or seams!

p.s. I'm adding both Knitch Magazine and afghans for Afghans to the link-tastic roll over on the side. I'm open to adding other charity knitting sites, too...just tell me about them!

Ribbons and Cake

No, no ribbon in the shop yet. I'm looking for ribbon next month at TNNA. Today, the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce is holding a ribbon-cutting at the shop! It's our official entry into the business community here, and a nice way to start the summer.

We'll have cake at the shop all day today, including at Purl Jam tonight! There are also tons of samples at the shop right now, along with new buttons, books and yarns. Come check it all out this weekend!

Father's Day Knit-a-Long

We know, Mother's Day isn't even here yet, but that leaves us plenty of time to get start on Dad's present. Why not a knitted vest?

Here's the deal: We'll use Figheadh's Fundamental Vest for Men. This oh-so-versatile pattern will let you pick any yarn you like...directions are included for yarns from fingering weight right up through bulky. So pick out a yarn that appeals to you (and, hopefully, Dad), get the pattern and proper needles, and get started!

Please post your fiber choices, and any other comments, here in the comments part of the blog. We'll also start a vest KAL over on Ravelry for those so inclined.

No, this isn't a class, just a knit-a-long, which means that several of us will be working this project up at the same time. You can get help over the rough patches (not that there should be any) and just gather to knit on Thursdays, our regular "Purl Jam" knit night, or on Saturdays from 1 til 3. The idea is just to try out a new project, knowing that several of your fellow knitters are doing exactly the same thing, but in such very different ways.

p.s. Don't think Dad wants a vest? Then we have the Fundamental Vest for Women or Kids, too!

Shop Happenings, Week of 4/27

We are settling into a routine around Sugarfoot...here is what is happening around the shop.

New Namaste bags are in, just in time for Mother's Day. New colors, a new style, and also some very cute little Buddy Cases. These are magnetized and have a divider, perfect for holding all of the little doo-dads that just seem to disappear.

Yarn? Why, yes, there is new yarn...including Plymouth's luscious Mulberry Merino. This is a single-ply blend, so soft and with a gorgeous glow. You really have to touch this one to appreciate it. We've also received some Encore DK, the reliable wool/acrylic blend but this time in a slightly light weight, perfect for caps.

We've also got new samples. Mission Falls (mentioned earlier) and several cute pieces from SWTC are on loan for a few weeks. SWTC patterns are free with a yarn purchase, and there are so many cute ones. AND SWTC yarns are perfect for warm weather!

Thursday evening is Purl Jam, as usual. Bring whatever's on your needles or hook, and join us around 6 for a couple of hours of social knitting.

Friday begins Yarns and Yarns! Local author Sara DeLuca will give a reading while we sit and knit (and possibly eat lunch). This starts at 12:15 and we'll be done by 1 p.m.

Emily's How to Read a Pattern begins this week with a full class. If you missed it, rest assured that it will be back during the summer. Rosemarie's Sock Anatomy continues on Saturday. Beginner knitting, the first class, wound up today! Congratulations to the class, which put up with some of the rough patches of a new shop as they learned a whole new craft. Jeanine has her crew off and running, ready to pick their next projects.

Plan to make Sugarfoot part of your week, whether it's with a class or a gathering, or just sitting in the rockers at front and knitting for a bit. We look forward to seeing you!

Mission Falls Trunk Show!

We've got new samples...a whole book's worth. All but two of the lovely designs from Mission Falls Goes Crochet will be at the shop starting tomorrow. We don't get to keep them forever, but we do get them for a while, so stop in and take a look at these lovely designs.

Mission Falls' 1824 wool and cotton are really cool, because they are interchangeable in patterns. We have samples in wool and cotton so you can get an idea of how these yarns work up. The color combinations are great!

Friday at Sugarfoot

Are you free for lunch today? Yarns and Yarns starts today at 12:15...join us and enjoy some knitting and a story. Today, local author (and my mother-in-law) Sara DeLuca will be reading from her book, Dancing the Cows Home. We'll have various authors and storytellers joining us as the weeks go by.

One of the great benefits of taking classes, other than your wonderfully expanded needlework knowledge, is the shop discount! You'll get 15% off all merchandise in the shop on the day of your class. This is great incentive to hang around and find your next project, to reinforce those skills. So, without further ado, here is the class listing:

Beginning Knitting: Tuesday mornings, April 14, 21, 28, 10 – 11:45
Instructor: Jeanine Waldrin
Cost: $60, including materials
This class is for absolute beginners! By the time you finish this class you'll be able to cast on (start your project), knit, purl, and bind off (finish your project!). Jeanine has taught lots of beginners, and she can get you off to a great start. The class will meet here at the shop. At the conclusion of the class you will confidently knit and purl and be ready for your second project. We can even help you choose that project while you are here.

Materials for the class: a skein of Cascade 220 and needles appropriate for the class (chosen by Jeanine). When you sign up for the class you can pick your (lighter) color and it will be wound and ready for you when the class starts.

After the Scarf…Knitty Vest: Saturdays, April 4, 18, 25, 1 – 3 p.m.
Instructor: Donna Williamson
Cost: $80, including materials
Mastered knits and purls, knitting scarves and looking for the next thing? Donna Williamson is leading a three-session class to make the adorable Boogie vest from Knitty. You'll do a little ribbing, a couple of cables, and learn shaping around the shoulders, all while using a chunky yarn for fast progress! Please note that we won’t meet on Easter weekend.

Materials include 4 balls of Encore Chunky in your choice of color, HiyaHiya circular needles, cable needles and stitch holder.

Sock Anatomy 101: Saturdays, April 25, May 2 and 9, 10 a.m.-Noon.
Instructor: Rosemarie Gagnon
Cost: $70 including materials
Learn to knit a sock from the cuff to the toe. You will learn how to knit the cuff, leg, and heel flap, turn the heel, work the sock gusset, knit the foot, decrease for the toe and, finally, graft the toe stitches together to get a smooth finish.

We will do different parts of the sock over 3 weeks, so you will need to come to class prepared! Bring in your gauge swatch to the first class and finish the homework each week. One option you have is to have 2 sets of needles so that you can work both socks together.

To take the class you must be able to knit and purl, and knit in the round on DP needles.

Materials List: 2 skeins of Cascade 220, one set of double-pointed needles.

How to Read a Pattern: Thursdays, April 23, 30 and May 7, 1-3 p.m.
Instructor: Emily Nadeau
Cost: $57, including materials
K1, P2, SSK…does that look like Greek? Join this class and Emily will de-mystify pattern instructions for you. In three classes, you’ll understand basic pattern reading, abbreviations, reading lace patterns, and how to use slip stitches. You’ll even learn tricks and tips like lifelines and coloring charts!

The class will complete three dishcloths of various patterns. You will need to bring a pair of size 7 needles (straight or circular) and materials for note-taking.

Materials List: Three balls of Rowan Handknit Cotton, stitch markers.

We'll be announcing classes in May, June and beyond very shortly! If you have requests (a finishing class, anyone?) feel free to pass it along via email. We can't promise everything right away, but we can make a great start.

Thursday night means Purl Jam!

A rainy day in here in Peachtree City...so grab your needles and hooks and yarn and head over to Sugarfoot tonight for our first Purl Jam. We'll have some munchies and music. You just need to bring your current project and hang out for an hour or two. We are open until eight tonight, so just count this as a little "me" time and enjoy!

In the interest of full disclosure, Cheryl won't be here tonight...she'll be spending the night at the zoo with her first-grader. But Rosemarie will be here, ably assisting and also possibly showing off some of the lovely recent arrivals. Yes, still more new arrivals--can you believe it?!

What a great day!!

Huge thanks to everyone who came in on Saturday! What a great turn-out, with roadtrippers from Columbus and Manchester and a group from the crochet retreat, too. I'll post some pictures shortly, but if you missed it, I don't think I moved from one spot (the register) for about 2 1/2 hours. So, if I didn't get to say hello, please come back...there will be space and time to peruse the patterns and find your next project.

I'd like to add...I know a few people bought enough for some great projects...please come stop in again to show off your finished projects! I'm getting a board together so we can all brag on ourselves, and inspire each other.

Even now I'm unloading SEVEN more boxes of things that weren't out on Saturday. And another shipment, including "prettier" crochet hooks and rosewood knitting needles is on the way. Things are always changing around here, so if you haven't found it yet, please ask.

While you are in the area...

If you are making a trip to Peachtree City, first, THANK YOU! Second, I wanted to give you a little information on nearby restaurants and other little shops, especially if you have non-knitters along for the ride!

First, restaurants...we've got three restaurants right in my area, not to mention Chick-Fil-A, Subway and McDonald's. Georgia Shrimp Company is a wonderful seafood restaurant. Ant Murphy has done a remarkable job bringing his native South African flair for seafood to Peachtree City. It is really a treat, and I see they are moving Jazz night to Thursdays pretty soon...hey! Sugarfoot is open late on Thursdays, too! Chopsticks Chinese Restaurant is just a few doors from Georgia Shrimp, wonderful Chinese food prepared with a lighter hand. Chopsticks was also recently remodeled, surprising and really beautiful. Beef O'Brady's is right next door to Sugarfoot, if you and your friends prefer casual burgers and wings. Loads of televisions, too, so if someone is with you who can't miss "the game," well, we can accommodate that!

Now, other shopping you might want to try...we have a great range of shops right here! Bella Boutique offers a wide range of lovely clothes, shoes, and jewelry, to fill the gaps in your wardrobe that knitting and crochet can't fill. (Yes, sadly, an entire wardrobe can probably NOT be knitted.) Chef Trish runs the Traveling Chef, where you can find a wide variety of gear for the kitchen, or, more to the point, grab-and-go meals which will allow you to knit more! Wags to Whiskers, right next to Sugarfoot, has everything you could possibly want to pamper you fur-covered best friends, including fresh-baked doggie treats! At Omega Books, Karen has committed to carrying a wide range of knitting books--we are working on the selection now. In addition, they have an amazing selection of new and used books. Bicycles Unlimited is your one-stop shop for anything cycling. Mark and Holly Anderson have run this shop for a long time, and they can answer any possible question about training or bikes. Pam's Hallmark is a terrific place for cards but also for so much more, all kinds of gifts and collectibles. She does an amazing job selecting interesting, unique items that you just can't find everywhere.

Further down the strip, Rona's Florist carries lovely arrangements and a unique rose called the "Rona Rose." She actually helped develop it, and it is worth stopping in to take a look. And Wild Birds Unlimited is on the far end of the strip from me. They have gorgeous bird house and feeders, as well as special seed blends for our feathered friends.

I hope that you'll consider making an afternoon of things, stopping in first, of course, at Sugarfoot Yarns! I think even the non-knitters who might tag along will find something to make the trip worthwhile. I'm looking forward to seeing you starting...today!

grand Opening!

Yes, grand with a small "g"...We are thrilled to be opening this weekend. So many beautiful things have gotten unbagged and unpacked, put on shelves and admired. We are absolutely thrilled to announce our grand opening this weekend. It's not "Grand" with a big "G" because, well, it just isn't, but that will be coming later...along with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting, and balloons, and a marching band. (Okay, maybe not a marching band, but balloons and a ribbon for sure.)

Please come in this weekend to check everything out. We will have plenty of new things, and even today I got FIVE more boxes of yarn to put out. Oh, and some VERY special alpaca, worth buying just for the adorable tags. (I know that sounds crazy, but trust me.)

Knitty Vest Class

I'll add to the link list over there again today...with the Mason-Dixon girls. Really, they were a revelation to me, in how much fun and how creative knitters are! They have two wonderful books that my neighbor, Omega Books, will be carrying for us, and their blog is loads of fun for new ideas.

Back to the shop...things are getting unpacked, put up, assembled and inventoried. I'm at the shop a lot...if you are in the neighborhood stick your head in and say hi!

Wanted to give an update on some of the products I've received lately. Beautiful super chunky (and, I know, warm) Misti Alpaca has been coming in. Quick knitting, lovely colors, squishable yarn...what could be better?

I got a small box containing several hundred buttons from Durango, too. Metal, horn, bone, painted and natural, many different selections to accent your creations!

The Hiya Hiya needles are in, loads of them. That includes the wee, adorable nine-inch circulars, as well as 40 inch circs in a ton of sizes. I also have a wide selection of sizes of crochet needles.

And, psst, the Addis are on the way. Turbos, Lace (WOW you have to try those) and even the Addi Click system.

If you are over at Peachtree Crossing shopping center, peek in the window! If I'm there feel free to stop in and say hey. I'll be sure to let you know as soon as I'm REALLY opened.

Shop progress

Hey! Things are crazy, getting ready for the shop to open. I'm actually looking forward to the slow-down once we get open!

Wanted to give an update on where things are: I've been moving things slowly out of my dining room and into the shop. Shelves and racks are mostly constructed, and the table is sitting ready for knitters, crochet and classes in the back of the shop. Sadly, it doesn't yet have chairs, so classes will be less fun until I get those put together! (Only kidding. The chairs will be ready for classes.)

I am learning to use the computer system, which is one of the major hurdles in opening. I should have things priced and ready to go by...dare I say it?...next weekend. I'll keep you posted, but it looks like it is pretty realistic. YEA!

More links, or just link...Twist Collective's Spring '09 issue is up! Twist Collective is another great on-line magazine, full of ideas and more projects than I could do in a whole lifetime of Spring '09s.

Speaking as a shop owner, it is also just reinforcement to the amazing variety of yarns available. I just quickly looked through some of the patterns, and even though I have thousands of skeins of yarn ready to go in the shop, there are just so many I don't have. I share this just to let you know...even if we don't have precisely the yarn called for in a pattern, chances are we have something pretty great that will give you a wonderful result. We can help you identify just what you need to create a lovely project. Ask! We want you to love your projects!

Sites we like

The bar over there will hold links to other sites we like a lot. Needlework, knitting and crochet in particular, has tons of resources available on the web. Over the next few days I'll add one or two at a time. Hopefully you'll be familiar with some, and others will be new discoveries. Feel free to let me know which are your favorites, too.

First is the "Facebook of knitting," Ravelry.com. If you aren't a member, get registered! There are so many resources there...patterns, forums, ideas and insights. Sugarfoot Yarns has a group there and it is a great way to find out what people all around the country are working on. There are groups for every imaginable interest, and crochet and knitting patterns abound.

For fun patterns and great advice, check out Knitty.com. Knitty has free patterns and is released quarterly. Socktopus is on my to-do list, among many other things.

Classes at Sugarfoot

Are you interested in learning something new, or improving some existing skills? We are starting to gather our crew of teachers and ideas for classes. Look for classes in beginning knitting and crochet, more advanced stitches like cables, a finishing class, socks, lace, and more! New classes will be announced here as soon as they are scheduled; you can always check out the classes page of the website for a complete listing.

Jeanine Waldrin will be teaching a three-session beginning knitting class on Tuesday mornings, April 14 - 28. The class will meet from 10 til 11:45, allowing pre-school moms to leave in time for pick-up! This is a class for absolute beginners: you will knit a scarf under Jeanine's excellent instruction. Materials are included in the cost of this class.

Donna Williamson will teach "Cables and Bobbles" on Saturday afternoons, 1 - 3, on April 4 and 18. This class is geared for those looking for the next challenge after stockinette and garter stitch.

I have a couple of other classes that will be added soon...coordinating with the teachers takes some time! Check back soon, and feel free request classes in the comments.

Sugarfoot Starts!

Welcome! The website is sort of live now, and it is high time for me to get the shop blog going. Up there is a "before" picture of the shop...it was a consignment store and it took a while for the previous tenant to get everything out. Including the slightly creepy little-kid manikins which my five-year-old just LOVED. So, we have been cleaning and scraping and now finally the paint is dry. This is a little better:
